These feeders and drinkers are designed to hang from a chain or rope but will work equally well raised a few inches off the ground on a cut log. If you put them on the ground they inevitably get full of dirt as the chickens scratch about so this is not recommended. Caution: Baby chicks can fall into drinkers left on the ground and drown, please raise the drinker at least an inch or two from floor height (they will still try to fall in but at least they might fall out again).
