Ant Powder
Permethrin powder is effective on all flying insects, mites and lice. Can be applied deep into the feathers by hand, but keep it out of the eyes and lungs - read the warnings!
Permethrin is considered safe and effective when applied externally to chickens for controlling lice and mites, provided it is used correctly. It is a synthetic version of natural pyrethrins, acts as a nerve toxin to insects, and has low toxicity to birds.
Important Safety Guidelines and Tips:
Application Methods: It can be applied as a powder (dust)
Application Areas: Apply directly to the chicken’s feathers, concentrating on the vent area, under wings, and around the neck. Avoid getting it in the chicken's eyes or nostrils.
Repeat Application: Because permethrin kills adult insects but not eggs, a second treatment is necessary 7 to 14 days after the first to kill newly hatched insects.
Coop Treatment: It is highly effective to treat the coop, roosts, and nesting boxes simultaneously, as mites often hide in cracks.
Egg/Meat Safety: No formal withdrawal period for eggs or meat is generally specified for poultry when used as directed, but one study detected residues in egg yolks up to 21 days after treatment.
Precautionary Note: Permethrin is highly toxic to fish, bees, and cats. Keep cats away until the spray is completely dry.
Safety for You: Wear gloves and a mask when applying to avoid inhaling the spray or powder.”
